  I chuckled. “I’m glad you’re happy. Because I want us to be one big family together. And I want you and Mommy to live with me forever.”

  “That’s what I want too. And Toto.”

  “And Toto of course. Now, can you keep a little secret?”

  He nodded. “I can. I’m very good with secrets.”

  “That’s good to know. Well, this is the ring that I’m going to give to Mommy.” I took out the ring and showed it to him, and he gasped.

  “WOW!”

  “Cool, huh?”

  “So cool!”

  “I’m going to ask her today. We’re going to go now and get some curry for dinner and then go pick her up. I want you to keep this a secret. I’ve made a nice little pretend restaurant for us in the basement. Then, I’m going to ask your mommy if she wants to marry me. If she says yes, I want you to give her the ring.”

  “Me?”

  I nodded. “Yes, I want you to be a part of it. You can keep the ring in your pocket. So, what do you think of my plan? Can you keep it a secret?”

  He zipped his lips with his fingers. “That’s how you keep a secret.”

  I smiled at him. “You’re a great boy.”

  We got the curry and then got Savannah. When she got into the car, she grinned.

  “Oh, this is a nice surprise. I didn’t know you were going to be here, Bobby.”

  “I decided to get him and Toto on my way.”

  “And I smell curry! Tell me that’s curry I smell?”

  I chuckled. “It sure is. I figured we deserved a treat tonight.”

  “Ah, you’re the best,” she said. “That’s exactly what I feel like eating tonight.”

  I turned around and winked at Bobby, and he giggled. When we got to the house, I told Savannah to take a warm bubble bath and said I had a surprise for her. While she was in the bath, Bobby and I got everything ready downstairs. We put little candles all over the room to light it up, and we put the curry on the table. Then, when Savannah was finished with her bath, we took her downstairs.

  “What’s going on?” she asked as we walked down the stairs to the basement. She gasped when she got to the bottom and saw what we had done. “Oh wow, this is beautiful.”

  “Welcome to Café Basement,” I said and pulled out a chair for her.

  “Only the best restaurant ever!” she said. “Why are you both looking at me like that?”

  I looked at Bobby, and he nodded at me. He looked like he was going to burst any moment if I didn’t say anything, so I knew I had to act quick. I smiled at Savannah through the light of the candle.

  “Savannah, I love you. I fell in love with you six years ago, and I fell in love with you all over again. I also fell in love with Bobby.”

  “And Toto!” Bobby said in a loud whisper.

  I chuckled. “And, of course, I fell in love with Toto. I have never been this happy, and my life has never been so fulfilled. Savannah, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you marry me?”

  Bobby walked forward and took the ring out of his pocket. He handed it to Savannah. “Will you marry Daddy?”

  Savannah looked at me and then looked at Bobby and then back at me. Tears were streaming down her face. She put the ring on her finger and nodded.

  “Oh wow, it’s so beautiful. And yes, of course, I’ll marry you,” she said with a smile and a sniffle. “I’ve never wanted anything more in my entire life. Thank you, Axel. Thank you, Bobby. I love you both so much.”

  “And Toto!” Bobby said again.

  Savannah chuckled. “And Toto. I love you all.”

  Epilogue

  Savannah

  Four months later.

  Today was an exciting day for the family. We were all on our way to the opening of Axel’s new shop. We’d decided to make a big production out of it and invite a big crowd to enjoy the first day. I’d worked on the invitations and had invited a lot of people, including Dominic, Candice, Spike, Keri, Pop, and as many clients and sponsors as I could think of. I wanted them all to know that nothing could bring us down and that the fire had only served to bring us together. Axel was excited. He’d gotten a new sign made, and he hadn’t yet seen it himself. Only Spike had seen it but had kept it covered until the grand opening.

  As we arrived, we saw that a crowd had already surrounded the place. When Spike saw us, he called us to the front. Axel thanked him and turned to the crowd, thanking them all for coming and being a part of his big day.

  “This shop is bigger and better than before. We’re not just going to be fixing bikes here. We’re also going to be selling bikes. We’ve also decided to add on a small café for clients who want to hang around a bit longer. And yes, of course, there’s going to be beer for after hours,” Axel said, and the crowd erupted in cheers. “Now, I’d like to reveal my new shop and my new name . . . Axel and Sons.” With that, Spike pulled down the covering to reveal the brand new wooden board. It was incredible.

  “But you just have one son!” someone shouted.

  I chuckled and turned to Axel. We hadn’t actually told anyone yet, but there was no better time than now.

  “Well, we have news,” I said and held my stomach. This caused yet another wave of cheer from the crowd.

  “Is there a baby in there?” Bobby yelled, and everyone laughed.

  I smiled at him and nodded. “Yes, Mommy and Daddy are going to have twins.”

  “WOW!” he said and came forward to put his hand on my stomach. It was still early, and you couldn’t really tell yet that I was pregnant, but I held his hand against my stomach anyway and grinned at him.

  “You are going to have two little siblings to play with.”

  “YES!”

  I chuckled. “Are you happy? You’ll be a big brother now.”

  “I’m very happy. But can Toto still be mine?”

  “Toto will always be yours.”

  We invited everyone in for drinks while they looked around the shop. I kept looking at Axel and smiling at him. He had a big broad grin on his face that nothing seemed to take away. I was so happy for him. He caught me looking and came up to me.

  “That was fun,” he said. “You think Bobby is okay with the news?”

  I nodded. “Oh yeah. He came up to me again and asked me about it. He’s excited. Thankfully he didn’t ask me how the babies got in there. Imagine he had asked that in front of everyone.”

  Axel chuckled. “Oops, we didn’t think that one through. And that’s exactly the sort of thing that Bobby would do too. Can you just imagine how much everyone would’ve laughed though while we tried to explain the birds and the bees in front of all of them?”

  “Thankfully not. But I’m not looking forward to that talk one day.”

  “Maybe we should let Dominic and Candice tell him,” Axel suggested.

  I chuckled. “Great idea. Ah, isn’t this such an amazing day? I feel so proud. I’m so happy about your shop, Axel.”

  “Our shop! You’re working here too, remember.”

  I smiled. “Yeah, that’s true. I’m just happy with everything.”

  “So am I, Savannah. So am I.”

  We stood there looking around at the room full of people and smiled. It was a good feeling to know that all these people had come for us. Life had changed drastically in the last few months, and once the twins came, it was going to change even more. But we were happy about the challenges coming our way. We’d been through so much that everything else just felt like a breeze. Four months had passed since Axel had proposed to me, and we were getting married in a few weeks’ time. We hadn’t planned to get married so soon, but we wanted Dominic and Candice to be a part of the wedding party. He’d been out playing football, and we had to work around his busy schedule. But I didn’t mind. The sooner, the better. We’d decided to keep the wedding as simple as possible. Just a few close friends and family. After all, that was all we needed.

  “I hope our life is as dull as possible,” I said to Axel and leaned in against him
. It was an inside joke between us now. With all that had happened, all we wanted was an uninteresting life.
