Blended Hearts #2 (An Interracial Stepbrother Romance Book) Page 5
“Nothing,” Gaby replied.
“Don’t give me that. I want to know why you were there when I’ve never seen you there on Friday night.”
At the time Gaby thought that Elise had just admitted to going to the café every Friday night. I had to agree with her. It sounded very much like Elise frequented the café regularly.
“I just went for a swim,” Gaby said, regaining a little of her aplomb. “I do three times a week these days.”
“I’m not interested in your sports activities, idiot; I want to know why you came to the café.”
“Sure. Nothing wrong with having a hot drink before going home, is there?”
At that point Gaby said that she was sure she was getting our dear Elise angry.
“No, there isn’t, Gaby. But, you see, I don’t really like anyone spying on me and my friends outside of school. So, is that what you were doing?”
“Don’t be an idiot Elise. Why on earth would I want to spend my precious time on a piece of shit like you…?”
I had to ask then; “Did you really say that?”
“No, maybe not, but whatever I said got her all riled up for sure.”
“Then what happened?”
“Oh, she told me that I should really forget about what I saw if I didn’t want to get into trouble. Elise said, ‘You know what I mean?’[”
“No idea,” I said.
“Then she went on with, ‘Well, let me spell it out for you: you won’t finish school this year. Is that clear enough for you?’”
“Good grief, Gaby, that’s a real threat,” I told her.
“No, it isn’t. It could mean a thousand things.” Gaby paused and then smiled.
I had no idea what would be so amusing at this point. From everything I had heard, Gaby would be in trouble from that day forward.
“Anyway,” she went on, “Thank God, Gill was there with me. He had heard the conversation.”
“Did he get on the line with her?”
“Oh yeah, he sure did.”
“So… What did he say?”
“He said something like: ‘Listen, Milton, if you have any intention of doing harm to my sister, or even bother her in any way, I will make sure that you get serious jail time. Gaby and I know exactly what you’re doing – and we don’t need to spy on you or your friends – now we just have all the proof we need to get you whenever we feel you’re at the end of your game. Understood?’”
“Wow! What did Elise say to that?”
“Nothing. She just hung up. My brother and I had a good laugh and went to bed. And I think that will be the end of it – for a while anyway.”
“But I bet you’re not going to swim next Friday, are you?” I asked, a smile draping over my lips.
“No. Even if Gill himself drags me to the gym, I would not go.”
That didn’t quite make sense, but I knew what she was talking about.
At lunch, Gaby and I decided to go for a walk. Strangely enough the weather was pleasant – even warm in the sun. When we sat down on one of the park benches, she said, “What about you? How did you spend your weekend?”
“It was okay, I suppose. After we talked on Skype we – I mean Daniel and I went to bed – and on Saturday…”
“Hold on a minute. You said you went to bed. Did you mean in the same bed?”
I bowed my head, but didn’t say anything. It was as if I couldn’t open my mouth. My lips felt locked in awful shame. I could not tell my best friend that I was in love with my step-brother.
“I knew it!” Gaby erupted. “You two are made for each other. You have to admit it, at least to me Madison.” She tried peering into my eyes. I couldn’t look at her.
“Hey, this is me? I’m not your mom or your pastor, I am just your friend; and I’m happy for you…”
I turned my face to her abruptly. “How could you be happy for me? This is terrible Gaby. The situation is a real nightmare if you want to know the truth.”
“How is loving someone be a real nightmare? I don’t understand…”
“Nobody does Gaby, including me. How could this happen to me? I felt just like any other girl would for him. And then it was like someone lit a match in my heart. I was burning with desire. I wanted him. And I despised him at the same time. I wanted him to reject me. But he didn’t, did he? He wanted me as much as I did him. He couldn’t stop himself. As for me, I was lost the minute he took my hand…. I don’t know what to do, Gaby. We want to ignore each other in public – especially at school. But how can you do that with someone you love?”
