Now Ethan pulled me closer, crushing my tits against his chest, and grabbing me by the ass, holding me there. He said, “I bet you put on one hell of a good show, especially with a body like this. Full tits, a round ass; men like a woman like that. I know I’d pay more money than you’ve ever seen just to see you grind that pussy.”

Things were getting awkward and I didn’t like it. I pushed away from Ethan, but he held me tight, saying, “How about we go back up to the penthouse and you can give me a private dance? I’ll have a big surprise in it for you if you know what I mean.”

I knew exactly what he meant; his erection was digging into my thigh and his hands were tearing into my ass. I forced myself free of his grip and escaped swiftly back to Dimitri with my heart pounding. I knew he’d be outraged at how his friend had treated me. I hated to cause a scene at a party, especially between friends, but this was too monstrous to keep silent.

Before I could speak, however, Ethan cut me off. Taking me by the hand, he gave Dimitri a meaningful glance and said, “She wants another tour of the penthouse, so I’m taking her up. Give us some time alone and then if you and Cocoa want to join, come on up in about thirty minutes.”

“Sounds great,” Dimitri grinned at his friend. My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach and didn’t know if I wanted to scream or vomit.

“No!” I cried out, wrenching my hand free from Ethan’s grip. “I never agreed to go to the penthouse with you! Just because I work as a stripper doesn’t make me a prostitute!”

Ethan gawked at me looking utterly shocked, as did everyone else within hearing distance, but I didn’t care. I turned my rage on Dimitri, glaring at him with piercing hatred, “And you introduced me to him! Did you think you could pimp me out to your friends, like you own me and I’m your whore? Go to hell!”

I turned on my heel and strode for the exit, my cheeks burning with rage and humiliation. Everyone was staring at me, but I kept my eyes on the door and charged ahead. Dimitri ran ahead of me, cutting off my retreat. His face was pale and his eyes were pleading, “Avery, wait! Please don’t go. I didn’t mean to offend you. I thought you wanted to sleep with Ethan. I was doing it for you.”

I was so flabbergasted by his words that I couldn’t even speak for several seconds. “That’s the most idiotic thing I’ve ever heard. How could think a thing like that, especially after we made love upstairs just a few minutes ago?”

“It’s because of what you said when we were up there. You said you wanted to have more sex there if you could. A lot of girls who come to parties like these want to fuck as many different celebrities as they can. I thought you were hinting at me that that’s what you wanted too. I swear I never would have set you up with Ethan if I didn’t think you wanted me to.”

“You are such an asshole. I came here with you. I made love in the limo and the penthouse with you. You’re my date; you’re the one I wanted to have more sex with in the penthouse. I wasn’t asking you to whore me out to all your friends like some slut, sleeping her way into acting jobs.”

“I know that now. It was my misunderstanding and my fault. I’m so sorry Avery. Please forgive me and let’s go back to the party. I’ll tell everyone what a dick I was and they’ll all have a good laugh at my expense. No one will think the worse of you, I swear it.”

“You got one thing right; you are a dick. I don’t want to go back to that party or do anything else with you ever again. It’s over between us, Dimitri. I never want to see your face again.”

I spoke quietly and my voice was steady and even. The look in my eyes wasn’t burning with fiery hatred, but bleary with pain. Despite everything he had made me believe, Dimitri Morrison had broken my heart in the end. I pushed past him, and to his credit he didn’t try to stop me this time. He just let me go, and I strode out of the hotel and into the starlit night. A permanent line of taxis waited outside the hotel and the doorman opened the passenger door of the nearest one for me.

“Where to, honey?” the driver asked me and I gave him the address to my apartment. Suddenly, the cabby grinned at me through the rearview mirror and said, “Hey, don’t I know you?”

“I don’t think so,” I said, wiping my eyes with the back of my hands.

“Yeah, I do,” The cabdriver insisted. “You were on the television a few hours ago, for the red carpet ceremony for that studio party. You were with that actor, Dimitri Morrison. You were his date!”

I smiled at the bitter irony. It was the first time someone recognized me for being on television and it had to be for that. Shaking my head sadly, I said, “That wasn’t me. I would never go on a date with an actor like Dimitri Morrison. He’s an asshole and I don’t want anything to do with him.”

“Yeah, it was definitely you,” The cabdriver wouldn’t just let the matter drop. “He told the interviewer you were some kind of an actress and then she asked you a bunch of questions. You were witty, funny, and sexy as hell. I recognize your sassy attitude! It was you!”

“Just drive please,” I said, praying he would shut up. All I wanted to do now was go home, take a hot bath, and crawl into bed and never get up again.

“So, what kind of an actress are you? Television, movies, plays?”

“I used to be an actress, but now I’m done with Hollywood. I don’t want anything to do with Dmitri Morrison, or anyone he has any connections with. I’ll probably just go back home and get married like my parents want me to.”

“That’s too bad,” the cabdriver muttered. “You had a real spark that lit up the TV screen. I bet everyone in Hollywood saw that interview and they all saw the charisma you’ve got. I get it, you got your heart broken and now you want to go home with your tail between your legs, but if you do that then the asshole that broke it wins. You should stay; see what comes from this whole thing. I bet I see you on the big screen in less than a year.”

“You really think so?” I wondered if maybe this crass cabdriver wasn’t wiser than he seemed.

“You’re damn right I do. Wait this thing out, kid. Don’t let the assholes win. Show them that you can make it with what you’ve got!”

  “Thanks, I will.”

I smiled, feeling strangely encouraged by his words. He pulled up in front of my apartment building and I realized I didn’t have any money on me. The light was on and I knew Shawnee was there to let me in. Turning to the cab driver with an apologetic smile I said, “How much for the fare? I’ll have to go into my apartment for the cash, but I promise to add on a tip for making you wait. It will just be a minute.”

“Forget it. This one’s on me,” The cabby waved his hand dismissively at me with a friendly smile.

“No, I have the money I swear. I just have to get it. Will a hundred be enough?”

“I already told you, kid. This one is free as my gift to you. I only want one thing from you; get out there and show these Hollywood pricks that they haven’t broken you.”

  “Thanks. I will.”

I was still smiling when I walked into the front door of my apartment to find Shawnee sitting on the couch, waiting up for me. Leaning forward expectantly, she said, “So, how was the ball Cinderella?”

“Ugh! Prince Charming was a frog, but I met a lot of people I never would have before and got some great exposure on television. Get ready for our phone to start ringing off the hook.”

  “Way to go, girl!”

Shawnee was happy for me. I just hoped my brave words came true.
